My Spiritual Sabbatical: A Year with Tribal and Plant Medicines

For the past 28 years I  have practiced as  a wellness doctor and self-help teacher. This has given  me the opportunity to have worked in over 10 countries, serve tens of thousands of  patients and have access to hundreds of healing modalities,  both as a practitioner and a student.

Being  a healer for almost three decades has confirmed to me the  massive role that one’s emotional health plays in their physical well being. Many non-responsive patients and those suffering from chronic or auto-immune disorders, have emotional wounds  that  had not been  fully healed. This fact led me to explore many traditional and alternative self-help methods.

My quest led me to  meet and work with the  Yawanawa Tribe from Brazil.

These indigenous people live deep in the Amazon jungle and  continue to live in a traditional way with little or no contact with the modern world. They frequently  practice  healing and spiritual ceremonies with  techniques and wisdom that have been passed down through their shaman for thousands of years.

During the course of a year I had  the privilege of participating in dozens  ceremonies. Additionally I was introduced to several  powerful traditional  medicines that are used for  physical, emotional and energetic healing.

Each of these were extreme and some felt like death-defying experiences. However, the results seemed to have matched their intensity. In my 12 month long Spiritual Sabbatical, I experienced a quantum leap in my  emotional wellbeing which  far exceeded the combined results of the previous 30 years that I was immersed in  the self help world.

In my upcoming blogs, I attempt to give an account of what my experiences that left me completely transformed and reinvented my life.

Some  of the modalities that I will attempt to describe (within the limitations of the written word) will include:

1) Kambo:

Kambo is a traditional healing ritual that involves ingesting the poison of the giant monkey tree frog to bring about a deep physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual cleansing process.

2) Bufo Alverius

A radical  experience which involves smoking the strongest known natural psychedelic, tryptamine 5-MeO-DMT produced by Bufo Alvarius, a toad of the Sonoran desert. The objective is a profound spiritual journey that yields powerful insights.

3) Psilocybin

Psilocybin has been shown to accelerate the healing process in many people for distressing emotional symptoms, such as depression, OCD, and anxiety.

4) Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca tea is an herbal drink that combines plants found naturally in the jungle of the Amazon, and it's been in use for centuries as part of religious and healing ceremonies. It has therapeutic benefits through the hallucinogenic and inter-dimensional journeys which is often a full  life review that results in changes in perspective that assist in healing deep emotional wounds.

5) Rapé

Rapé is a dried and powdered tobacco snuff that comes from the Amazon, where it is used as a powerful detoxing medicine.

6) Sananga

Sacred, shamanic eye drops brewed from the Tabernaemontana genus of shrubs, used  by  indigenous cultures to increase  perception and open the third eye.

7) San Pedro

The San Pedro cactus contains mescaline which is a psychedelic hallucinogen obtained from the small, spineless cactus Peyote (Lophophora williamsi).

During my year as a psychonaut (explorer of consciousness), I also experimented with many other powerful modalities, met many amazing healers and had a handful of moving mystical experiences.

This transformational year, albeit agonizing at times, has been nothing short of spectacular with long-lasting positive results. It is my wish that by recounting these experiences, the awareness of these powerful modalities will be raised,  allowing more people to access and benefit from them.

Note to reader: Much of my inspiration for experimenting with these plant medicines come from listening to the Joe Rogan podcast and his conversations with Graham Hancock as well as the Tim Ferris podcast where he discusses the important role that psychedelics can have in the treatment of depression and ptsd.
